What is your treatment philosophy?
Crossroads for Women’s philosophy is that substance abuse, mental health and co-occurring treatment for women must build upon and respect women’s unique needs to focus on self-determination, choices, positive relationships and connectedness. We believe services must be provided in a secure, non-judgmental, welcoming environment that embraces cultural diversity.
Why are services only for women?
There is a tremendous social stigma attached to women who abuse alcohol or drugs or experience mental health issues. Shame and the fear of severe consequences, such as losing custody of their children, often lead women and their families to minimize or deny the existence of a problem.
The experience of trauma and the lack of healthy relationships are extremely common in the lives of affected women. Healing requires that women be in an environment in which they can experience supportive, sustaining relationships with staff and each other, using a model of treatment that focuses on relationships.
Effective substance abuse treatment for women must acknowledge and respect the reality and differences involved in being a woman in our society. It must address a women’s substance abuse and/or mental healh within the context of her physical health and her relationships with her children, family members, loved ones and community.
